  • According to folklore, Zhong Kui travelled together with his friend Du Ping from his hometown, to take part in the imperial examinations at the capital. Though Zhong achieved top honours in the exams, the emperor stripped him off his title of "zhuangyuan" because of his disfigured appearance.
In anger, Zhong Kui committed suicide upon the palace steps by hurling himself against the palace gate until his head was broken. His friend Du Ping buried him. Eventually Zhong became the King of Ghosts in Hell and one Chinese New Year's eve he returned to his hometown. To repay Du Ping's kindness, Zhong Kui gave him his younger sister in marriage.
Zhong Kui's popularity in folklore can be traced to the glorious reign of Emperor Xuanzong (712-756) of the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
The story has it that at one time when the emperor was gravely he had a dream in which he saw a small ghosts stealing a purse from his favourite concubine Yang Guifei and a flute, belonging to himself. Then a bigger ghost, wearing the hat of an official, captured the smaller ghost, tore out his eye and ate it. The bigger ghost then introduced himself as Zhong Kui and said he had sworn to rid the empire of evil.
When the emperor awoke, he had recovered from his illness. He then commissioned the court painter Wu Daozi to draw an image of Zhong Kui to show to the officials. This drawing is said to have been highly influential to later representations of Zhong Kui.
  • This Zhong Kui Gaiwan is made from authentic Jingdezhen porcelain. This art work is inspired by the ancient Chinese legend Zhong Kui, who is a renowned folk hero, known for warding off of evil and catching ghosts. Zhong Kui is a popular character in legendary stories throughout many generations. Bats in traditional Chinese represent auspicious.
  • This Zhong Kui Gaiwan paints a vivid portrait of Zhong Kui in traditional red garments, and serves as a practical, easy-to-handle Gaiwan. The color red in Chinese tradition also signifies the warding off of evil. Doucai is an traditional Jingdezhen porcelain glaze with five colors on the surface of the porcelain. The glaze is called "Gu You", meaning ancient glaze, which has become Jingdezhen's hottest trend in recent years.
  • Ru Yao porcelain, named after it is originated in Ruzhou, is a very precious ceramic, which ranks the first place among Chinese Five Famous Kiln -- Ru, Guan, Ge, Jun, Ding. In addition, the tiny grains (cracks or “Kai Pian” in Chinese) are not conspicuous for the new Gaiwan. But with long time use, the tea liquid will gradually penetrate into the cracks, so that we can see these grains clearly. The deeper the grains, the more charming the Gaiwan will be.
  • Ru Yao porcelain Zhong Kui Gaiwan is a little quieter than other Gaiwan, quietly holds the tea liquid and quietly waits the owner to drink. The characteristic of thick Gaiwan wall makes it seldom burning drinkers’ hands and the sagging design on the body of Gaiwan makes it more convenient for us to hold. Moistened by tea liquid, it will slowly appear the two-tone beautiful grains and then unconsciously transform into the world's unique exclusive Gaiwan.
